Our Mission
The mission of the John L. Killian Foundation is to promote male breast cancer awareness, reinforce prevention and early detection, and advocate for those diagnosed with the disease.
Goals:
-
Change screening protocols to create standardized screening programs.
-
Create avenues for males to access information, education and screenings.
-
Change insurance company guidelines for standardized care.
-
Support and advocate for those diagnosed, their families and caregivers.
Did you know?
-
Men are often diagnosed at a later stage of breast cancer than women. One possible reason for that is men may be less likely to report signs and symptoms, which can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
-
Some men may be embarrassed about a change in their breast or chest area. Others may not know it's important and put off seeing a health care provider. This can also result in a delayed diagnosis.
-
Survival is highest when breast cancer is detected and treated early.
Statistics:
-
In 2023, it's estimated there will be 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer in men (this includes new cases of primary breast cancers, but not breast cancer recurrences). This will result in 530 deaths.
-
From 2014 to 2018 (most recent date available), the median age of breast cancer diagnosis for men in the U.S. was 68.
